  3. Following the defeat in 1943 of the Nazi-backed Croat Ustasa regime by communist partisans led by Tito, Bosnia Herzegovina became one of Yugoslavia's six republics.

  5. *  1990 Nationalists defeat communists in multiparty elections. PDA leader Dr. Alija Izetbegovic is president.
  6. *  1991 Serbs declare "Autonomous regions." Parliament announces republican sovereignty.
  7. *  1992 EC and USA recognize Bosnia. Serbs announce "Serbian Republic." Civil war between Muslims, Croats and Serbs begins. UN sends troops to guard aid convoys. 
  8. *  1994 NATO threat of air strikes on Serbs attacking UN "safe areas."
